SASSA Banking Details 2026 — How to Update Your SRD Payment Account

"Banking Details Pending" on your SASSA status check means SASSA cannot pay you until your payment details are confirmed or updated. This is one of the most common reasons SRD payments are delayed. This guide explains exactly how to update your SASSA banking details online, which banks SASSA accepts, and how long it takes for changes to reflect.

Not sure of your status? Check your SASSA status first to confirm it shows Banking Details Pending before following this guide.

What "Banking Details Pending" Actually Means

When your SASSA status shows "Banking Details Pending," it means SASSA has reviewed your application and determined you are eligible — but they cannot release your payment yet because your payment details are unconfirmed. This is not a rejection. Your application is approved. The hold is purely administrative, and it is fully fixable without reapplying.

There are three reasons this status appears:

  • You never submitted banking details. Some applicants skip the banking step during the original application, intending to add it later. The system flags the application as approved but holds payment until details are added.
  • Your submitted details need verification. SASSA's system verifies that the account you provided belongs to you and matches your ID. If verification is still in progress, the status shows as pending.
  • Your previously submitted details are invalid or have changed. If your bank account has been closed, changed, or contains an error from when you first entered it, SASSA cannot send payment to that account and flags it for update.

The solution in all three cases is the same: log into srd.sassa.gov.za and submit or update your banking details with correct, verified information. Once SASSA confirms your account, payment will be processed in the current or next payment run.

Which Banks SASSA Accepts for SRD Payments

SASSA accepts bank accounts from the following South African financial institutions for SRD R370 payments:

Bank Account Types Accepted Notes
ABSA Savings, Current, Cheque Must be in your name
African Bank Savings MyWorld account accepted
Capitec Savings, Transaction One of the most commonly used for SASSA
FNB Cheque, Savings Easy Account accepted
Nedbank Savings, Current Ke Yona account accepted
Standard Bank Cheque, Savings Access account accepted
TymeBank EveryDay account Digital bank, account opened via Kiosks at Pick n Pay/Boxer
Postbank (SAPO) Savings Accessible at Post Office branches

Account requirements

Regardless of which bank you use, your account must meet these criteria for SASSA to accept it:

  • The account must be registered in your name only — the account holder name must match your SA ID exactly
  • The account must be active — not closed, frozen, or dormant
  • The account must be a South African bank account — foreign bank accounts are not accepted
  • Both savings accounts and current/cheque accounts are accepted — SASSA accepts either type as long as the other criteria are met

Joint accounts may be rejected if the primary name on the account does not match your ID exactly. If you share an account, use a personal account registered solely in your own name.

How to Update Your SASSA Banking Details Online

The entire update process is done online at srd.sassa.gov.za. You do not need to visit a SASSA office or a bank branch unless you are unable to obtain proof of banking through other means.

Step-by-step: update banking details online

  1. Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Click "Update Banking Details" or "Change Payment Method" from the main menu
  3. Enter your 13-digit SA ID number in the field provided
  4. Enter your registered mobile number — the same number linked to your SASSA application
  5. An OTP (one-time PIN) will be sent via SMS to that number — enter it to verify your identity
  6. Select your bank name from the dropdown list
  7. Enter your bank account number — double-check every digit
  8. Select your account type (savings, current, or cheque) — this must match what the bank has on record
  9. Upload your proof of banking — a bank statement or bank confirmation letter not older than 3 months (see next section for how to get this)
  10. Review all details and click Submit

After submitting, SASSA will verify your banking details within 1 to 3 business days. You will receive an SMS confirming verification. Once verified, check the SC19 portal at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status to confirm your status has updated from "Banking Details Pending" to "Approved."

Timing matters: If your payment date is approaching, submit your banking update as soon as possible. Changes verified before the 15th of the month typically apply to the current payment run. Changes verified after the 15th will apply from the following month.

How to Get Proof of Banking for SASSA

Proof of banking is a document that confirms your bank account is in your name and shows your account details. SASSA accepts a bank confirmation letter or a recent bank statement. The document must not be older than 3 months. Here is how to get proof of banking from each major bank without visiting a branch:

Capitec

  • Dial *120*3279# on your phone and follow the menu to request a confirmation letter sent via SMS or email
  • Or use the Capitec banking app: go to "Statements" then "Bank Confirmation Letter"
  • Or visit any Capitec branch and ask a consultant to print one on official letterhead

FNB

  • Log into the FNB app, go to "Statements," then "Bank Confirmation Letter" — download as PDF
  • Or use FNB Online Banking: "My Bank Accounts" then "Bank Confirmation Letter"
  • The letter is instant and can be uploaded directly from your phone

ABSA

  • Log into the ABSA banking app and go to "Accounts" then "Statement" — download a recent statement
  • Or visit an ABSA branch and request an official bank confirmation letter printed and stamped

Standard Bank

  • Log into the Standard Bank app or online banking and download a recent account statement
  • Visit a Standard Bank branch and request a bank letter confirming account details

Nedbank

  • Use the Nedbank Money app to download a recent account statement
  • Visit a Nedbank branch for a printed confirmation letter

TymeBank

  • Log into the TymeBank app and download your account statement from "Statements"
  • Visit a TymeBank kiosk at Pick n Pay or Boxer for a printed confirmation

Postbank

  • Visit your nearest Post Office with your original SA ID and ask for a Postbank account confirmation letter
  • Postbank does not currently have a self-service app for this purpose

What your proof of banking must show

The document must clearly display: your full name as it appears on your SA ID, your ID number, your bank's name, your account number, your branch code, and your account type. Documents that show only partial information or that are photocopies of another person's documents will be rejected.

If You Don't Have a Bank Account — Other Payment Methods

Not having a bank account does not disqualify you from receiving your SASSA SRD payment. SASSA offers three non-bank payment options that do not require a bank account.

Post Office (SAPO)

You can register to collect your payment in person at any South African Post Office. You will receive an SMS when your payment is ready and can collect it on or after your assigned pay date. Bring your original green barcoded ID book or smart ID card — no photocopies accepted. Payments are available during Post Office operating hours.

Shoprite and Checkers

SASSA sends an SMS to your registered phone number with a payment voucher reference. Take this SMS and your ID to any Shoprite or Checkers money market counter to collect your payment. You do not need a bank account or debit card.

Pick n Pay

The same SMS voucher system applies at Pick n Pay. Collect at a Pick n Pay service desk or money market counter with your ID and the SMS reference SASSA sends you.

How to register for non-bank payment methods

Log into srd.sassa.gov.za and go to "Change Payment Method." Select your preferred non-bank option (Post Office, Shoprite, or Pick n Pay) from the dropdown and follow the prompts. No additional documents are required for non-bank options, but a valid phone number is essential as SASSA uses SMS to notify you when payments are ready.

How Long Does It Take for Banking Details to Update?

After you submit new banking details on srd.sassa.gov.za, SASSA verifies the information against their banking verification system. This typically takes 1 to 3 business days. During verification, your status may continue to show "Banking Details Pending" — this is normal.

Will you receive payment this month?

Whether your updated details apply to the current month depends on when you submit the update and when SASSA processes that month's payment run. As a general rule:

  • Details submitted and verified before the 15th of the month — your payment will likely be processed to the new account in the current month
  • Details submitted after the 15th of the month — the current month's payment has usually already been batched. Your new details will apply from the following month.

Checking that the update was applied

After 3 business days, log back into the SC19 portal at srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status. If the update was successful, your status should show "Approved" rather than "Banking Details Pending." If you still see "Banking Details Pending" after 5 business days, contact SASSA via their helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or WhatsApp 082 046 8553.

SASSA Banking Scams — Protect Your Account

Criminals specifically target SASSA beneficiaries because they know payment periods and can impersonate SASSA communications convincingly. Protecting your banking details is critical.

What SASSA will never do

  • SASSA will never send you an SMS asking for your bank PIN, card number, or full account details via SMS
  • SASSA will never WhatsApp you a link asking you to update your details via that link
  • SASSA will never charge you a fee to update your banking details or to receive your payment
  • SASSA will never call you and ask for your OTP — if someone does this, hang up immediately

Only use the official portal

Always update your banking details by typing srd.sassa.gov.za directly into your browser's address bar. Do not follow links from SMS messages, WhatsApp messages, or Facebook posts even if they appear to be from SASSA. The only official domain for SRD banking updates is srd.sassa.gov.za — anything else is not SASSA.

Common scam: "SASSA agent" calls

A widespread scam involves callers claiming to be SASSA agents who can update your banking details over the phone for a small fee. There is no such service. SASSA does not update banking details over the phone. If you receive such a call, end it and report the number to SASSA's fraud line at 0800 60 10 11.

If you gave your details to a third party

If you suspect someone has your banking details and may try to access your account, contact your bank immediately on their fraud line. Ask your bank to place an alert or temporary freeze on your account. Then update your banking details on srd.sassa.gov.za to a new, secure account.
